Globally, we’re witnessing a rapid shift in AI governance. The EU AI Act and the updated U.S. NIST framework are beginning to embed ethical principles into law, but their most meaningful innovation may be the acknowledgment that technical performance is not the final metric. What matters is whether AI systems enhance human agency, preserve dignity, and contribute to our collective well-being. This reframing—toward what Brookings calls the “flourishing imperative”—represents a fundamental pivot from compliance to aspiration.
